Lisa Mitchell Tyler is the Organist and Choir Director at The United Church in Washington, D.C. Though primarily an organist, she also performs frequently on piano in a wide range of settings. She studied piano with Rebecca Fox and Dale Anthony, and both organ and piano with Paul Leavitt. She began her organ studies in 1982 with William Neil of the National Symphony Orchestra and continued at The Juilliard School with Leonard Raver, organist of the New York Philharmonic.

Tyler has collaborated extensively with brass musicians, performing numerous concerts with Chuck Seipp, former trumpet soloist with the U.S. Army Band, at venues including the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, National City Christian Church, and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. In 2017 she performed with trumpeter Phillip Snedecor of the Hartt School of Music at Grace Church in New York City. As a collaborative pianist she has accompanied many vocal and instrumental soloists, as well as the Fairfax and Loudoun County school choruses.

She has performed for the Northern Virginia chapter of the American Guild of Organists and for the combined D.C.-area AGO chapters at the annual Bach Marathon at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. Her honors include a semifinalist award from The American Prize in 2022, second place in the Community Keyboard Division of the Boulder Bach Festival’s 2020 World Bach Competition, and a semifinalist award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts in 1984. She lives in Herndon with her two children.
